The Band

Rob McCuen
Guitar, Vocals, and Banjo

Rob plays guitar and banjo in Wiley Dobbs, providing vocals as well.

He played cello as a youngster, but eventually turned to the acoustic guitar. Rob played electric guitar through high school, then began focusing on acoustic instruments. He ran away to the mountains during college, keeping authorities at bay with his incessant banjo picking.

Rob tries to emulate the styles of Grisman, Rice, and Grier in his playing.

Jim McCuen
Upright Bass

Jim provides the bottom-end for Wiley Dobbs, in the form of upright bass.

He began his musical journey on the viola as a grade-schooler, graduating to electric bass in high school. He played bass in Billy McFreak, alongside Rob, Bill, and BMC. Jim then toured with the regionally-known ska/pop group Conehead Buddha for several years, still playing with Rob and Bill as the Fairy Gangstas.

While a Gangsta, Jim made the transition to the upright bass. He hasn’t looked back since.

Bill Buyer
Mandolin, Guitar, and Vocals

Bills mandolin playing and singing are integral to the Wiley Dobbs sound.

He started his career in grade school chorus as well as a brief stint on the trombone. Bill studied music in college, working on theory, performance and production aspects of the medium. After various electric projects he took up the mandolin as a Fairy Gangster in the early nineties. It was at this point that he was bestowed a beautiful 1920 Gibson A by his Grandmother. He continues to wield a mighty ax though as he still burns to shred!

In Bills playing one can hear nuances of Grisman, Hendrix and genres as far reaching as hip-hop.

Matt Davis
Drums

Matt plays drums and percussion with Wiley Dobbs and provides spiritual guidance for the other band members.

His first memories of “playing” with “da boys” are of singing Old Macdonald around the sandbox in nursery school. From there he began playing percussion and drum set in fourth grade; his illustrious middle and high school band career lead him to stints with acts such as the symphonic band, wind ensemble, chorus and jazz band. He also jammed with bands such as Midshift, and began experimenting with the McCuen twins and Bill Buyer. During college he played with the jazz band and other side projects such as the Fatty Davis Band.

In between stints leading trips and searching for himself in the wilds of New England he has continued honing his percussion skills with a variety of musicians and groups including Wiley Dobbs.

Matt has been consistently playing with Wiley Dobbs for well over a year and brings a great deal to the group’s sound.
